Whether it’s due to an accident, decay, or congenital defect, missing teeth can be problematic for both the health and appearance of your smile. Fortunately there are several different solutions to tooth loss, including dental bridges.
A bridge fills the space left by a missing tooth. Composed of a prosthetic tooth flanked by dental crowns, the bridge fits into the gap and bonds to the adjacent natural teeth or dental implants. Chesapeake Contemporary Dentistry is proud to be one of the few dental practices to offer all-ceramic bridges, which are the most natural-looking dental bridges available. Please contact our Baltimore-area office to determine whether dental bridges are the ideal solution for you!
After a comprehensive consultation, our dentists begin by preparing the teeth surrounding the gap. This may involve removing a small bit of enamel to
make room for the crowns that will attach to these teeth. We take impressions of the teeth and gums to send to a professional lab, where your
custom-made bridge is created. Our dentists place a temporary bridge in order to protect the teeth and space while your permanent bridge is being
crafted.
Once we’ve received your permanent bridge back from the lab, we’ll replace the temporary bridge with your custom-made bridge. The prosthetic tooth fits neatly in the gap, and the crowns are bonded to the surface of the teeth surrounding the gap. Once the bridge is securely in place, our dentists will make any minor adjustments necessary to ensure a comfortable fit and a healthy bite.
Continual maintenance of your dental bridge is critical. Daily brushing and flossing is necessary for the bridge to stay looking and feeling great for as long as possible. We recommend returning to our office for regular dental checkups.
There are several benefits to dental bridges:
There are several types of dental bridges, each with their own unique characteristics. A traditional bridge, composed of crowns on either side of the false tooth, is the most common. The crowns can be supported by either natural teeth or dental implants. A cantilever bridge is recommended for patients with teeth on only one side of the space; the false tooth is supported from one end with either one or two crowns. The third type of bridge, a resin bonded or “Maryland” bridge, is commonly used to replace missing front teeth. The Maryland bridge is a metal framework with a false tooth attached to two metal wings on either side. The wings bond to the back side of the teeth adjacent to the space.
Bridges may be composed of the following materials:
Having a dental bridge placed at our Baltimore facility is one of the safest ways to address tooth loss, but there are some drawbacks. Bridges only work with spaces consisting of three or fewer missing teeth. Bridges are not removable, though they may need to be replaced after time. All of these points will be taken into consideration during our consultation with you to determine whether a dental bridge is a good solution for you.
Although we offer several different types of dental bridges, we are one of the few in the Baltimore area to place all-ceramic bridges. Contact our experienced dentists to schedule an appointment; you’ll soon discover why Chesapeake Contemporary Dentistry is the right fit for you and your smile.
