Used to replace teeth that have fallen out or been extracted, dental implants are placed in the jawbone to support natural-looking prosthetic teeth. Although our other treatment options, including dental bridgesand custom dentures, have their individual benefits, the dental implants placed at our Baltimore-based practice are the strongest option in terms of functionality and durability.
Contact our cosmetic dentistry office in Edgewood to schedule a consultation and determine whether dental implants might be the right choice for you.
Our dentists prefer to first consult with you to determine whether you are an appropriate candidate for the placement of dental implants. Some factors
that might affect the decision are your personal habits (e.g., smoking, flossing) as well as the condition of your oral tissue and jawbone. If you do
not have sufficient jawbone to support the implants, bone grafting is an option.
The first phase of treatment is an oral surgery procedure in which a titanium metal post is implanted into the jawbone. The surgery site is given time to heal; the bone grows directly around the post in a process called osseointegration. This creates a solid base for the prosthetic tooth. Depending on when the implant heals (typically after several months), the second phase of treatment begins. Our dentists top the post with a prosthetic tooth that looks and functions like a normal tooth.
Patients who are not able to receive a full set of dental implants may opt for implant-supported dentures as a solution to missing teeth. Implant-supported dentures are more stable than traditional dentures because they are anchored in the mouth by several titanium screws. A few titanium screws are placed in choice areas of the mouth to act as roots for the prosthetic teeth. After the gums have healed from the implant procedure, dentures are attached. Implant-supported dentures are more stable and comfortable than removable dentures, and promote positive oral health by preserving bone structure.
If you are missing a tooth, a dental implant is the most stable way to replace it, while maintaining normal appearance and function. Since the implant acts as an anchor for crowns, they are structurally the strongest way to replace a missing tooth. If taken care of properly, implants can last for many years. They also prevent oral health issues that may occur because of missing teeth, including jawbone deterioration, bite problems, and periodontal disease.
Although it is rare, sometimes a patient’s implant does not integrate with the bone. Dental implants may damage blood vessels or other teeth, and in very extreme cases may damage nerves in the jaw. Thankfully, with the correct care and implementation, dental implants have a 90 to 95 percent success rate.
If you think dental implants are a good fit for your needs, contact our Baltimore-area dental practice. We are more than happy to help you fix any dental issues that may be bothering you.
